💔 What Does Advocacy Fatigue Look Like?

We know advocacy is important, but we don’t always talk about how emotionally draining it can be. When you’re constantly stepping into hospitals and appointments, repeating stories, defending care plans, or fighting to be taken seriously, it begins to take a toll.

You may notice:

  • Feeling emotionally flat or overwhelmed after medical conversations.

  • Dreading appointments, even before they begin.

  • Losing sleep or replaying interactions long after they’re over.

  • Feeling invisible, unheard, or too exhausted to push again.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone—and there is another way.

A Moment from My Story: Breaking Down in the Car Park

Years ago, after a particularly difficult appointment with a new, dismissive doctor, I left the building feeling defeated. I’d prepared, I’d advocated, I’d done everything “right”—and still, I wasn’t heard. I got my kids into the car and stepped away to the boot, where I collapsed in tears. Not just for that appointment, but for every one before it that asked too much of me.

That was the day I understood that advocacy isn’t just a role—it’s emotional labour. And emotional labour requires rest, support, and protection.

Why Is Advocacy So Exhausting?

  • Emotional stakes: You’re advocating for someone you deeply love.

  • Power dynamics: It can be hard to speak up in rooms full of professionals.

  • Repetition of trauma: Telling the same story again and again is draining.

  • Dismissal: Feeling ignored or sidelined chips away at your spirit.

 Strategies to Protect Your Advocacy Energy

You don’t have to keep burning out in silence. These strategies can help you show up without sacrificing your emotional wellness:

  1. Build in recovery time – Don’t jump into the next thing after an appointment.

  2. Use scripts – Ground yourself with prepared statements like:

    • “I’ve written down a few key updates I’d like to share.”

  3. Tag-team when possible – Bring someone with you or request permission to record.

  4. Have an emotional outlet – Journalling, therapy, community groups, use what helps you decompress.

You Don’t Always Have to Be “On”

Being a powerful advocate doesn’t mean being perfect. It means showing up with self-awareness. If you’re overwhelmed, you are allowed to ask for:

  • A support person is present.

  • When do I feel most emotionally drained?

  • What helps me recover?

  • What small shift can I make this week to protect my energy?

Whether it’s booking a moment of rest after appointments, setting clearer boundaries, or allowing yourself to say, “I need to step away,” your nervous system deserves support, too.
