Welcome back to Radiant Moments, the J and B Inspired podcast! I’m Michelle, your host, and I’m thrilled to have you here as we continue our journey of discovery and connection.
Before we dive into today’s discussion, I invite you to take a moment for yourself. Find a comfortable spot, perhaps brew a cup of tea or coffee, and let’s create a space where you can truly unwind and feel at ease. In the hustle and bustle of caregiving, it’s easy to forget to prioritize your well-being. But here, in this moment, give yourself permission to pause, breathe, and be present.
Whether you’re a seasoned caregiver or just starting out, know that you’re not alone. Together, we’ll uncover the radiant moments in caregiving, share stories of resilience, and explore the transformative power of compassion and connection. So, sit back, relax, and let’s embark on this journey of self-discovery and growth.
In our previous episode, we explored how self-care and celebrating milestones fit into the caregiving journey. Today, we’re diving into a crucial skill for caregivers: learning how to move from feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or frustrated to a place of calm regulation—within 90 seconds or less.
Caregiving can often feel like an emotional rollercoaster. One moment, you’re handling everything with confidence, and the next, a sudden turn of events—a medical crisis or meltdown—can send you spiraling into overwhelm. But how we manage these emotions has a profound effect on both us and our loved ones.
Our emotions ripple outwards. If we’re stressed or anxious, our loved ones can sense that, which can make caregiving situations more challenging. However, the ability to regulate emotions is a skill—a skill that can be learned and mastered. The more we practice this, the better we can manage intense moments and model calmness for our loved ones.
Why 90 seconds? Neuroscience research shows that emotions like stress, frustration, and overwhelm pass through our system in about 90 seconds—if we don’t feed into the emotion with mental narratives. That’s the key. By staying present and allowing the emotion to pass, we can stop it from escalating.
The challenge lies in staying grounded during those 90 seconds. Acknowledging the emotion, feeling it, and letting it go without spiraling is a skill that can transform your caregiving experience. Let’s explore some powerful tools that can help you find calm and balance in those crucial moments.
Our breath is a powerful tool for calming the mind and body. When overwhelmed, our natural reaction is shallow, rapid breathing. One effective technique is "box breathing," where you inhale for a count of four, hold for four, exhale for four, and pause for four before repeating. This simple practice slows the heart rate and triggers relaxation.
Grounding brings your focus back to the present moment. Techniques like the “5-4-3-2-1 method” can help:
5 things you can see
4 things you can touch
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
This exercise helps shift your focus away from overwhelming thoughts and reconnects you with your surroundings.
Sometimes, stepping away and redirecting your attention can help reset your nervous system. Whether it’s making a cup of tea, listening to your favorite song, or taking a short walk, these activities offer a mental break and allow you to return to caregiving with renewed focus.
